If you’re reading this, chances are you love your trees. And it’s not hard to see why – they are beautiful, they make our homes and the world better places to live, and they even give us the oxygen we need to merely survive! But when it comes to taking care of trees, that’s a different story. Just like looking after a baby, or even your shiny beloved car, to look after your trees well, it’s important to know a little bit about tree care and maintenance.
So here are a few tree maintenance tips that should get you started from JC Tree Services.
1. Tree planting
Rather than just whack them anywhere, you need to give your tree an appropriate place to grow and thrive, with the right amount of sun and space to stretch out – watch out particularly for power lines, underground utilities, and correct planting depth.
2. Tree watering
Every plant needs something to drink! But in Australia, we can go several weeks without much of a drop, so don’t forget about your thirsty tree. Different trees need different amounts of water, but as a basic rule, water your newly-planted or young trees the most often.
3. Tree pruning
Don’t forget, proper pruning is not something only those true or meticulous tree lovers do – it really helps trees thrive and even survive. Do the bulk of your pruning in the tree’s more dormant season, and at other times give them a tidy and remove the damaged or dead bits.
4. Tree mulching
There’s no doubt about it – trees love mulch! It insulates the roots, gives trees some protection and keeps the soil damp. Just make sure you don’t cover up the trunk’s base.
5. Tree removal
Tree removal can be difficult and dangerous, so it’s best to leave this to the pros who have all the right experience and tools, and also understand any regulations that may be in play (yes you may need council permission for cutting down trees). So the best tip is that you should at least consult with an arborist before removing trees, especially large ones.
6. Tree fertilising
Trees in the wild normally get enough natural fertilising materials, but in your yard, commercially-available fertiliser is the way to ensure your tree has all the right nutrients. For really advanced tree lovers, you can even test the soil to see what it needs.
7. Tree checkups
Do you get a regular check-up at the doctor? If not, you really should – and so should your trees! You want them to be healthy, you want to guard against tree disease and pests, and you want to ensure they’re not endangering your assets (or the neighbours’!). The solution? Book in a regular check-up with your favourite arborist!
